In this study, small polyoxymethylene (global production ~3000 Tg per year) pellets were exposed in terrestrial and simulated marine environments to heat and light, resulting in cracking during decay with increasing IR absorption (OH-bonds). Marine plastic debris is an environmental problem, and its degradation into microplastics (1-5000 μm) introduces them into the food chain. 6Department of Applied Chemistry, Providence University, Taichung, Taiwan.5Aerosol Science and Research Center, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.4Department of Public Health, College of Health Science, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.3Department of Chemical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan.2Learning Guidance Center, Open University of Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.1Department of Marine Environment and Engineering, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. ![]() Chih-Cheng Tang 1,2 Ying-Ting Chen 1 Yi-Ming Zhang 1 Huey-Ing Chen 3 Peter Brimblecombe 1 Chon-Lin Lee 1,4,5,6*
